TRUE STORIES

Lady Left With Stroke Symptoms for 12-24 hrs In Nursing Home
------------------------------------------------------------------------

Don't ask how I get my information I just do !

I held a conversation with a person (lets call him Jon) who has a new career in being a carer at an old peoples home. I asked Him about the last shift he had done in the home. Jon explained that he was on a one to one shift. I asked exactly what does that entail and why was that needed . He replied " In some cases when behavior seems to be erratic , moody, violent and difficult sleep pattern the person needs to be access and monitored for a set time. All this info then needs to be written down in a report. This report then will be
reviewed to see if the person needs extra medication  or care attention or even to be considered for institutionalized into mental care facility.
So was this a normal shift for you or was there some difficulties? he began to explain " Everything was normal to the extent  on being on the verge of great, as the women I had one to one with was in high spirits and very sweet . She slept on and of during the night in total about an hour . The times she was awake she was pleasant, responsive and cognitive. After getting her ready for breakfast and walking her to the dining room I noticed another lady who was not her happy self, she always makes a fuss of me when she sees me as I'm her favorite. But this morning things were so different. My heart dropped as I realized her head was to one side and she didnt turn to me as I spoke to her. As came around to the front of her, face to face I could see that her skin on the left side of her face was drooping I then quickly held her hand and she responded with a squeeze but when I held her other hand the whole hand and arm was not responsive to my touch or gentle movement to her hand or arm . I could see that it looked like she had  a stroke. So I called for assistance and insisted to call for an ambulance as normal procedure would be to call for the doctor. There was no time for the doctor to arrive so the ambulance would be the priority call  in this case. The head of staff called the ambulance this arrived with in five minutes.I was due to come off duty so the woman that was on morning shift went to the hospital with her. This was after all the information was collected  (meds etc: ) for the Lady. Then given to the paramedics. As I talked to another member of staff (senior carer ) she said " she was looking a little like that yesterday and she didn't manage to eat or say a lot I just thought she was under the weather". Well you could of knocked me down with a feather I just did not believe what I just heard and it shook me so hard and to top it all the Manager to the Home was on shift yesterday !!
Thats it I can't talk about it any more I need to get my rest ready to do another late night shift tonight".
